ATV World (Hong Kong) 11:25PM - The Parting Of The Ways
Monday 15 May:
CBBC 1PM BST "Totally Doctor Who" ep 5
UK Fans - be aware that the start time for Doctor Who is not as
consistent as last year. This weekend (13 May) the new episode on
BBC One starts at 7PM! Next weekend (20 May) the episode starts at
6:40PM! Last week's overnight ratings showed that a large number of
people tuned in at 7:15PM for an episode that began at 7PM -
probably because the first 3 episodes of the season had started at
7:15PM, 7:18PM, and 7:20PM. It is best to check the week of
broadcast in case the start time has changed again - don't assume it
will stay the same. Presumably the BBC is confident enough in Doctor
Who's ratings to play games with the schedule.
The Girl In The Fireplace averaged 7.4 million viewers in the
overnight results on Saturday 6 May, the most successful show on
British TV that evening by a wide margin. School Reunion's final
numbers for 29 April according to the Barb is 8.31 million, an
increase of 720,000 over the overnight results.
Be careful when checking Doctor Who sites and forums in the next
couple of weeks. Interest in the Rise of the Cybermen/"The Age Of
Steel" 2 parter is very high, and there are lots of apparent
spoilers flying around (some are likely erroneous). I've already
heard more than I wanted to in spite of trying to stay in the dark
on this one. Something about the 2nd most popular Doctor Who monster
of all time (after the Daleks) coming back and how it creates
gossip. Good for the show - not so good if you want to be surprised
and won't get to see the episodes when they premiere.
One non-spoiler rumour - it is alleged that Rise Of The Cybermen is
46 minutes long with no next time trailer - you may want to allow
extra time in case the episode begins early or ends late.
BBC Four http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbcfour is having a robot/cyborg
evening this Saturday which seems to tie into the "Rise Of The
Cybermen" episode, so I'll include it in the column this time. The
programming:
8:15PM + 11:50PM "Timewatch: Machine Men" - a special about robots
and cyborgs through the ages, expected to focus on Cybermen
9:15PM + 12:50AM "A For Andromeda" - 2006 remake of the 1961 sci-fi
serial about a computer and a robot
10:40PM "A For Andromeda: The Face Of The Tiger" - only surviving
episode of the 1961 sci-fi serial, returned to the BBC in early 2006.
Schedules will be a little more eccentric than usual in the UK next
week.
1) The Age of Steel (Series 2 episode 6, part 2 of a 2 parter)
premieres Saturday 20 May at 6:40PM. The early start time is due to
fitting in a full lottery programme before Eurovision. The "Totally
Doctor Who" that day will air at the regular 6:30PM time on CBBC, so
if you see the Saturday airing of Totally you will miss much of the
main episode - catch Totally on Thursday, Friday, or Monday if you
want to see the Doctor Who episode. The Age of Steel repeats
Sunday 21 May at 7PM on BBC Three.
2) The Doctor Who Confidential episode for Saturday 20 May will air
at 7:25PM. At this time, there is no unedited repeat scheduled. A
Cutdown repeat is expected for Sunday 21 May at 7:45PM. Last year,
episode 9 of Confidential aired the night of Eurovision, and has
never repeated complete since - only in Cutdown format.
3) BBC Three is REPEATING Series 2 episodes beginning Monday 22 May
at 7PM. The Christmas Invasion is scheduled for 22 May and "New
Earth" is scheduled for 23 May. Each is listed at 45 minutes with a
Cutdown Confidential episode airing afterwards. Since The Christmas
Invasion was 60 minutes long and had no connecting Confidential
episode, I'm hoping that is an error that gets corrected.
UKTV Gold has told viewers that Doctor Who is being "rested" and would return to the lineup later, which if true may contradict earlier reports that the 1963-1989 repeats are being bidded on by various broadcasters. Time will tell. For now, the repeat run that began on UK Gold in 1992 ended on Sunday 7 May with The Trial Of A Time Lord - The Ultimate Foe.
BBC Kids Canada has rebranded the evening/late night portion of its lineup. It is now known as BBCK http://www.bbck.ca . BBCK has its own website and Doctor Who page, though the schedule information is still included on the BBC Kids http://www.bbckids.ca site. This may be based on the success of certain youth oriented US cable channels who now have different identities for day and night programming (Noggin/The N, Nickelodeon/Nick At Nite, Cartoon Network/Adult Swim). It would also recognize some of the raunchier shows on their late night lineup these days (Blackadder, The Young Ones). All Doctor Who broadcasts are in the part of the schedule now known as BBCK.
A personal note. I'm getting Married on May 20! It's been a long
time coming. This Week In Doctor Who will have a guest editor on May
24 and 31. Jefferson Eng will be handling the column while Lisa
Margaret Ethington (soon to be Elliott) and I are on our Honeymoon.
From May 17 to the end of the month, you can reach Jefferson at the
thisweekindoctorwho-owner e-mail address with updates and
information. The column will be getting some tweaks and sprucing up
in June and July.
The BBC Press Office http://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice and C21 Media
http://www.c21media.net often announce when a Doctor Who
international sale occurs. Worth keeping an eye on, just in case.
Corrections and updates are welcome at thisweekindoctorwho-
